Anthony Collins Solicitors contributes to the first book dedicated to achieving social value in construction

Beulah Allaway and Martin Brown, solicitors in our construction team, have contributed the legal chapter to a new book entitled ‘Social Value in Construction’, published by Routledge and available to purchase from 17 December 2018.

The book has been produced through a collaboration of individuals with an international reach and headed up by academics at Nottingham Trent University; drawing on experience of academics and construction industry professionals, with Beulah and Martin providing insight into how to maximise social value through public sector contracts whilst maintaining compliance with UK public tendering law.

The conversation between many of the book’s collaborators began at a round table discussion on the subject, supported by the Association of Researchers in Construction Management and held at Nottingham Business School (part of Nottingham Trent University). Beulah was one of a small group of participants invited to take part in the discussion, which also included private and public sector contractors and clients, social enterprises and researchers and academics. Discussions on the day helped to crystallise the need for a text that is accessible for both researchers and practitioners.

The book is cited as the first book dedicated to the subject of social value in construction; setting the agenda by exploring important questions through real-life case studies and examples of best practice, to demonstrate how innovative companies can utilise contemporary research to create social value. Beulah Allaway has, for many years, supported public sector and social housing clients navigate public procurement regulations to achieve social value through works contracts, with Social Value in Construction being her latest publication on the subject. Together with Martin Brown, they offer a mixed disciplinary approach; being able to advise clients in the round on construction, public procurement and State aid issues. Their experiences working with clients on development projects and the public procurement rules fed into this project and helped inform their insights.
