Academies outsourcing services such as catering and cleaning often share the risks of participation in the local government pension scheme (LGPS) with contractors. The DfE has now made it clear that academies will need to request permission to do so and that permission will not always be granted. This will impact decisions about whether to outsource and procurement timetables.

  • You know how to apply for permission from DfE and when permission is likely to be granted;
  • Your procurement exercise is not delayed by the need to seek permission or change tack; and
  • You work well with the relevant LGPS fund(s) in preparing for the procurement.
