West Mercia Police have released a statement confirming that there will be a police investigation into maternity services at Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Hospital Trust.
Assistant Chief Constable Geoff Wessell from West Mercia Police said;
“Today, 30 June 2020, we have met with NHS Improvement, The Department of Health and the independent reviewer to discuss complaints made against Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Hospital Trust in relation to maternity services and provision. The independent review is ongoing. We can confirm that a police investigation will be conducted to explore whether there is evidence to support a criminal case either against the Trust or any individuals involved.”
An independent review being lead by Donna Ockenden is already underway into maternity care provided at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust. There are currently around 900 families involved in this review and Ms Ockenden and her team followed the announcement to urge any more families that have concerns over the care and treatment provided by the Trust to make contact with her. The review into avoidable baby deaths at the Trust was first announced in 2017, by the then health secretary Jeremy Hunt, and the scope of the review was later widened by NHS Improvement to review the total of deaths, stillbirths and babies with brain damage born at the Trusts hospitals since 1998.
At Anthony Collins Solicitors we have advised a number of families, alongside Ms Ockenden’s review, in relation to concerns as to the care and treatment provided by maternity services at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals Trust.
