Improving Communities

Regenerating a community landmark

White Rock Neighbourhood Ventures

White Rock Neighbourhood Ventures (WRNV) is a Hastings-based joint venture between three community enterprises – Meanwhile Space CIC, Jericho Road Solutions, and the Heart of Hastings Community Land Trust.  WRNV was created to acquire, transform, and make available for community use, neglected buildings in the heart of the town. Anthony Collins Solicitors provided State aid advice to WRNV to support their applications for grant funding to redevelop the Observer Building – a landmark heritage building in Hastings’ town centre.

A community hub

WRNV’s regeneration project is set to rescue the building and transform it into a usable community asset. Once completed, the mixed-use building will contain a co-working space comprising desks and studios to rent, spaces for retail and leisure use, a community space, affordable accommodation and a rooftop garden with panoramic views for use by both tenants and the public.

The State aid advice provided supported WRNV to unlock a total of approximately £1m of public funding so far, with potential for a further £1.1m, helping to get the project off the ground. This project will contribute significant social impact in Hastings by preserving a historic building and reinventing the space as a fantastic community hub.
