What was our brief?
An Academy had a need for legal support arising out of confusion around their procedures for permanently excluding pupils. In particular, there was confusion around who could sit on governor exclusion hearings and independent appeal panel hearings.
What did we do?
We provided advice and support on the procedures to be followed and assisted with the drafting of correspondence to solicitors in order to avoid legal challenges. We went onto to provide training and guidance to the governors and the senior leadership team as well as working on a new procedure for gathering evidence to assist in any future exclusion decisions.
How did we add value?
We provided hands on support to an academy which was left in a difficult position when a member of staff left. Our practical advice allowed the academy to move forward and the additional work with the leadership team and governors should lead to a greater confidence in their exclusion procedures in the future.
