Grandparent gets custody of children

Release Date: 24 April 2009

We were approached by Grace who was the grandmother of two children, Luke and Neil. Luke suffered from cystic fibrosis and Neil had been placed with Grace since birth.

The children’s mother (Grace’s daughter) and their fathers had been ruled out as carers for them and the Local Authority had a plan of permanency away from the family by way of adoption.

Grace approached us for help and we were able to convince the Local Authority to assess her as a special guardian for the children, an assessment which was ultimately positive.

Upon the positive recommendations of the report, we were able to agree with the Local Authority that they would help Grace in buying appropriate furnishings for the children and landscaping her garden to allow the child, Luke, to have a good outside area in which to play given his problems.

Grace was very happy with the outcome of the matter as it meant the children were able to remain in their family and be cared for by their grandmother, as opposed to permanently out of the family in an adoptive placement with a family they would not have known.
