Please join us to hear how the Imagine Project can help us achieve a more sustainable future.

Cycling is a remarkably efficient and environmentally friendly way to get around. However, manufacturing everywhere is based on taking raw materials, turning them into products and when they are finished with, throwing them away. This is wasteful and unsustainable; there must be a better way.

The Imagine Project is a pioneering project attempting to rethink the way bicycles are made and supplied. The aim is to design bicycles so that they last longer, and when they finally reach the end of their lives, all raw materials can be separated and reused. This is known as a “closed loop” or “circular” supply chain.

Cyclo-cross champ and game-changing entrepreneur, Isla Rowntree, will describe her aims for the  Imagine Project. This will be followed by Andrew Ritchie, the founder and designer of Brompton Bicycles, who will highlight some of the challenges. As well as hearing from Isla and Andrew, there will be a question and answer session and an opportunity for networking over light refreshments.

This is not just about cycling. The Imagine Project has the potential to contribute to manufacturing businesses across the region and, by encouraging the circular economy, to help reduce waste and pollution with all the health and other benefits that would involve.

The team advises staff and board members of charities and other not-for-profit organisations, including Cycling UK and Sustrans, on the creation of such organisations, their dissolution and most of the issues they encounter during their lifespan.

Isla Rowntree, Islabikes, Imagine Project

Isla Rowntree is a cyclo-cross champ and entrepreneur, who has revolutionised the bicycle manufacturing industry with her company, Islabikes. Through the Imagine Project, Isla is developing a small range of sustainable bikes, which will be manufactured here in the UK. These will be utility “riding to school" bikes that will sit alongside the Isla Bike models and will be available for use on a rental-only basis.

Andrew Ritchie MBE, Brompton Bicycles

Andrew Ritchie MBE is the inventor of the Brompton folding bicycle, and has guided the Brompton Bicycle company to become the largest bicycle manufacturer in the UK. In 1995 he received the Queen's Award for Export and in 2009 the Prince Philip Designers Prize.
