Day 8 - inquest into death of David Gray

Release Date: 01 February 2010

Wisbech Magistrates Court, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire

The Coroner invited submissions on the verdict and Barabara Hewson provided the Coroner with Submissions on behalf of the family.

David Locke also provided the Coroner with Submissions on behalf of NHS Cambridgeshire.

Finella Morris, representing Take Care Now (TCN) indicated that she did not intend to file submissions on her client’s behalf as they wished to let the evidence speak for itself. She explained that TCN did not accept all of the submission on behalf of the family and the PCT.

She reminded the Coroner that other Agencies were investigating the matter including the Healthcare Commission, The General Medical Council and the Care Quality Commission report is due later this year.

Finella concluded that the Coroner’s deliberations should also take into account that the civil matter is still ongoing. She pointed out that Parliament was unable to discuss the matter as the Inquest had not concluded. However, Parliament omitted to take into account that the civil matter is also ongoing and she will therefore need to bring this before the attention of the Health Minister in order to ensure that no further debates take place in Parliament until the matter has settled.

The Coroner adjourned the Inquest and indicated that he will give his verdict on Thursday 4 February 2010.
